Truth and Love Bond People Together

Ask God: John was filled with the spirit of truth. He encourage followers of Jesus to demonstrate God's love in Truth and Love. He also encouraged disciples of Jesus to be aware of deceptive people who would turn believers away from God.

Good Evening Reader,

This week’s lesson is taken from 2 John and is about love and truth. Years ago, Captain and Tennelle had a hit song: “Love will keep us together.” The song touched the hearts of listeners because of the truth in its message. Love keeps families, marriages, communities, Sunday School classes, and churches together. Love is strong and powerful. Add truth and the bond becomes unbreakable.

May God bless you abundantly this day.

All Glory to God.

“Where Love and Truth Walk Together”

Text: 2 John

You know how the deepest friendships are built on both love and honesty? You can’t have one without the other. Love without truth becomes shallow sentiment. Truth without love becomes cold. Both are necessary to create genuine relationships and genuine fellowship.

That’s what John, the beloved disciple, wrote about in his brief but powerful letter of 2 John. He warned believers not to be swept away by false teachers who claimed to love yet ignored the truth, and by others who claimed to know the truth yet lacked love.

And when we step back and look at God’s great story—from Eden to the Promised Land to the coming Kingdom—we see that same theme written across every page: God longs for a people who walk with Him in both love and truth.

The Garden of Eden — Where Truth Was Tested and Love Was Lost

In Eden, Adam and Eve lived in perfect harmony with God. Truth wasn’t something they studied—it was Someone they walked with. Love wasn’t an emotion; it was their environment. They lived in unbroken fellowship, surrounded by beauty and peace.

But then came a lie. The serpent didn’t destroy Eden with a weapon; he did it with words of deception. He asked, “Has God indeed said…?” (Genesis 3:1). With that question, he attacked truth—and love soon followed. When Adam and Eve believed the lie, they chose self over God, and their fellowship with Him was broken.

John echoes this same warning centuries later. He wrote, “Many deceivers have gone out into the world… Watch yourselves, so that you do not lose what we have worked for” (2 John 1:7–8). Lies still destroy love. When truth is compromised, fellowship fades.

That’s why the Garden reminds us: when we drift from God’s truth, we lose the sweetness of His love.

The Promised Land — Where Truth Was Proclaimed and Love Was Practiced

Fast forward to the nation of Israel. God called His people out of Egypt, not just to free them, but to fellowship with them. He said, “I will walk among you and be your God, and you shall be My people” (Leviticus 26:12). God desires a relationship with His people.

The Promised Land was never meant to be merely real estate—it was a relationship. God gave His law not to restrict them but to teach them how to love rightly: God first, and each other second.

When Israel obeyed God’s truth, they experienced His love in tangible ways—rain in its season, peace in their borders, joy in their hearts. But when they chased idols and false prophets, the land became dry and their hearts empty.

That’s the heartbeat of 2 John. Verse 6 says, “This is love, that we walk according to His commandments.” Love isn’t a feeling we float in; it’s a direction we walk in. Love walks hand in hand with obedience.

John reminds us that to live in truth is to live in love—and to live in love is to live in truth. God’s people must never separate what God has joined together.

The Millennial Kingdom — Where Truth and Love Reign Forever

Scripture ends where it began—with a garden and a loving King. When Christ returns, He will reign for a thousand years. Sin will be bound, and righteousness will fill the earth. The curse that began in Eden will be lifted.

In that day, love and truth will no longer compete—they will reign together in perfect harmony. “The earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord” (Habakkuk 2:14). Every word Jesus speaks will be true. Every act He does will be an expression of love.

What Adam lost, Jesus restores. What Israel only glimpsed, the Kingdom will display in full. It will be the eternal home of those who “walk in truth” (2 John 1:4) and whose hearts are filled with love for God and one another.

Living It Now — Love and Truth in Us

Until that day, we live in a world where both love and truth are under attack. Many say, “Love is all that matters,” while others cry, “Truth is all that counts.” But God’s Word says we need both.

Truth without love becomes cruelty; love without truth becomes corruption. But truth and love reflect the very nature of God—“God is love” (1 John 4:8), and “Your Word is truth” (John 17:17).

When you forgive someone who wronged you, you walk in love. When you refuse to compromise God’s Word to fit culture, you walk in truth. And when both meet in your heart, you walk in fellowship with God.

Closing — The Fellowship God Always Wanted

From Eden’s garden to the Kingdom’s glory, God’s plan has never changed. He desires people who will walk with Him in love and truth and dwell with Him in sincerity of heart.

The longing you feel for peace, for purity, for presence is the echo of Eden. And it will one day be fulfilled when love and truth embrace forever, when God once again walks with His people face to face.

“Grace, mercy, and peace will be with us, from God the Father and from Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love.”2 John 1:3

Reader,

Hosea said his people were destroyed for lack of knowledge. Knowledge give believers and non-believers a choice. When a person does not know, they cannot choose.
